Since the arrival of the first wave in the early 1960's there have always been Mods. Although the name would only apply to the dedicated follower of the two main items on a Mod's mind, clothes and music.

There are three kinds of Mod:

The Retro Mod- the one who looks back to the 60's for all things Mod
The Revival Mod- still looking back but to the revival of 79
The Neo Mod- didn't know what he was called until now, because he is reading this

The Neo Mod rides a custom scooter, it is part of his look and not just a way of getting to work, it is part of his mindset. The scoot is efficient, ecological and visible, not just another anonymous road bike and the Neo Mod dresses to match. Shying away from the overload of mass produced uniforms for the season and establishing rapport with outlets of imported and local designer fashion. Money well spent if it leaves you feeling and looking good.

Image is everything:
Three button suit, high cut with flat front pants and no turn ups, turtle neck knit, polished loafers for work. After the ride home he may change into a polo shirt, 501's and deck shoes, a Merc lightweight Boxer jacket for nipping down the pub.
Favoured labels:
For the Neo Mod are Merc London and 67 for leisure wear, John Smedley and Pringle for the knitwear, Cox and Windsor Smith grace the feet. Even the socks and daks are worth the effort, Holeproof, Macpherson, Hom. Klein if he's feeling Marky...

Music is vital:
All kinds of music. The Neo Mod goes for everything. While the sartorial leanings of a Neo Mod can be stylised the musical tastes can not, unlike the retro and revivalists who have secured their allotted time slots in history. The focus is wide open when it comes to beats and bass, melody and harmony. The audio collection of a Neo Mod has a moment for every moment, to analyse it would be too hard.
There are no musicians who write and create specifically for the Neo Mod.
There are no bands playing Neo Mod music.
When you close your eyes and recall a summer's day ride, sun flashing off polished chrome on a nicely tuned Vespa PX 200, the soundtrack is eclectic, anything goes. Philly Soul, Hip-Hop, 60's Britbeat and German Trance. Like the freedom born of two legs astride two wheels there are no boundaries, and it can be a shared or very personal thing.

The Neo Mods
are gathering, tribalising. A voice. Global. Not so much a revival but a coming together of like minds, kindred spirits, shared hopes and dreams. They look very corporate to the untrained eye and can blend in, hold court and make deals.

Looking like one of them but born one of us.

To them he is an Outsider.
